Initiative to Implement Sustainable Design Thinking Into Elementary and Middle School Curricula

The Reimagined Project

Problem

Elementary and middle school students nationwide lack education on sustainability. After significant research including interviews with a wide range of parents, educators, and students, I found that the problem lay in limited access to resources and materials for teachers. In addition, there is not enough time in the day or space in the Common Core Curriculum to teach sustainability.

Lesson Stages

Split into three phases - Ideation, Creation, and Reflection - each phase of the lesson extends across individual class sessions or days. Each segment is designed to occur independently on its own day.

Creation Process

Pattern Making

Students are asked to create a pattern out of their original sketch of their imaginary creature. This process involves cutting their creature out of paper and using it as a stencil to cut out the fabric.

Lesson Materials

Material Choice

Students will use old clothing and accessories as material to make their stuffed animal. They are  able to choose based on color and texture they want for their design.

Performed with elementary and middle school students, this lesson plan has been in action and received feedback from the users: students and teachers.

Approach

Teaching students about sustainability through design thinking can allow them to identify problems, brainstorm ideas, and test these ideas using prototypes to achieve solutions. Integrating sustainability and design thinking not only enhances students’ community engagement but also fosters early creative problem-solving skills, expanding their interests beyond traditional curriculum boundaries.

Using sewing techniques or fabric glue, students will stitch together the patterns of their creature. After stuffing their creature, and patching it up, their vision is brought to life!

Lesson Execution

Solution

I designed a three-part lesson plan that aligns directly with the current 3-5 grade level and middle school Next Generation Science Learning Standards. This lesson plan involves students designing their own imaginary creatures by using upcycled clothing. The lesson touches on sustainability topics, and design thinking skills, and allows students to apply their insights in their community.
